Peaches

August’s NH Harvest of the Month: peaches!

Peaches originated in northwest China and were first domesticated along the Yangtze River around 6,000 BC and spread to Persia via the Silk Road. By the 17th and 18th centuries, peaches appeared in the U.S.

Today, California is the leading producer of peaches in the U.S. followed by South Carolina and then Georgia. New Hampshire only produces peaches on about 83 acres. China and Italy produce the most peaches globally.

Peaches are members of the rose family and there are over 700 varieties.

In Ukraine, fruit dumplings called Varenyky are made with raspberries and peaches.

In China, the peach is a symbol of longevity. Duck Sauce is usually made with either peaches or apricots.

In India, peaches are used in chutneys, curries, pickles, halwas, and syrups called sandesh.

This webpage includes a variety of educational materials, activities, recipes, and more about peaches for use at home, in youth or family programming, in the classroom, and in the cafeteria. For more New Hampshire Harvest of the Month resources for August, click here.
